GONE TO PIECES

Gone To Pieces

I feel as if I'm riding off into the sunset
in some Sergio Leone western
filmed in Las Vegas
Lee Van Cleef squints
as Wayne Newton gets paid
...and I saw Elvis's corpse exhumed and eaten
washed down with tequila shooters
the number 667 was stamped on his forehead
right next to an AT&T logo
I turned away and out of the corner of my eye
I caught a glimpse of eternity
Shiva, the Buddha, Jesus, and Mohammad
came riding up on palominos
smoking cigars and wearing ponchos
so I said 'hey guys, which way to the border?"
Shiva spit out the cigar and as it hit the ground it turned into a lotus
Jesus said "go west young man"
I scratched my face
looked up and asked
"where are you guys going?"
The Buddha said---

We're swimming in the Sea Of Tranquility
We're stepping out of time for tea
We're swimming in the Sea Of Tranquility
We're stepping out of time for tea
We remember the Alamo
We're waiting for Godot
In the shadow of the new frontier

And in my mind I'm gone to pieces
I've gone to pieces in my mind
As my confusion never ceases
I've gone to pieces in my mind
Ooo I'm gone to pieces
I have gone to pieces... in my mind

We're running in the human race
We're tourists in outer space
We're in a state of grace tonight
We're swimming in the Sea Of Tranquility
We're stepping out of time for tea

And in my mind I'm gone to pieces
I've gone to pieces in my mind
As my confusion never ceases
I've gone to pieces in my mind
Ooo I'm gone to pieces
I have gone to pieces... in my mind

There's a voice on the radio
Don't ask 'cause he don't know
We remember the Alamo
We're waiting for Godot
This train is bound for other worlds
I got what I like and I like what I got
I'm a passenger on a train of thought
My hands are bound by strings of pearls

And in my mind I'm gone to pieces
I've gone to pieces in my mind
As my confusion never ceases
I've gone to pieces in my mind
Ooo I'm gone to pieces
I have gone to pieces... in my mind

We're swimming in the Sea Of Tranquility
We're stepping out of time for tea

(This is an update on a song that originally was written in 1989.
The new version is very similar both in lyric and melody.)
