HOME

Gonna shake the road coat off a’ my bones,
Just got back from the combat zone,
Close only counts  in horseshoes &  handgrenades,

Gotta take a trip to my little town,
Where the ghosts of youth are hanging around,
Playing  tag between coups and the parades,

Southbound turn it around like a Citizen Kane,
Home isn’t where the heart isn’t there,
My head remains my house until it rains…

Got to break free of the ball & chain,
Man it’s good to be here again,
I need shelter won’t you take me home,

Got to believe in the Shangri-la,
Singing a song that goes  tra -la -la,
As I pedal around and around in my personal velodrome,

Southbound turn it around like a Citizen Kane,
Home isn’t where the heart isn’t there,
My head remains my house until it rains…

As we condo out the future and we sell the promised land,
We will pave the desert over, we will auction off the sand,
Do the dance of demolition, to finance the acquisition,
We devour our traditions, as children swim in quicksand,
(solo)
Southbound turn it around like a Citizen Kane,
Home isn’t where the heart isn’t there,
My head remains my house until it rains…

Commentary

The lyric was written about returning to my home town.
A sense of loss overwelmed me as I barely recognized the place I grew up.
Although the song is autobiographical in nature,
it is told through the eyes of a soldier returning after risking life & limb.
("Just got back from the combat zone, close only counts in horse shoes & handgrenades")
How strange to dig for traces of my own heritage.
I suppose the message is:
Don't let this happen to you!
